The curriculum is enriched through a wide variety of activities and events, trips and opportunities to perform.
A strong fixtures programme is in place in the school and children compete in a wide variety of sports including football, tag rugby, swimming, hockey, netball, tennis, athletics and tri golf. We are members of the School Sports Partnership in Lancashire and also take part in numerous IAPS events across the region as well as hosting events here at Ashbridge. We have been awarded the Gold Mark for School Sports in both 2018 and 2019.
Trips and Residential Opportunities
Children enjoy the opportunity to get out and about regularly with trips taking place in every year group throughout the year. These include visiting the theatre, places of worship, Houses of Parliament, museums, science centres and much more. All children in the Junior School enjoy a residential experience, starting with one night away in Year 3 and building up to a full week in the Lake District in Year 6.
Music and Drama
Children take part in a variety of assemblies and concerts throughout the year and all children from Year 2 to Year 6 are entered into the York Academy of Speech and Drama Exams, involving reading aloud, reciting poetry and delivering presentations they have created. In 2021, 54% of the children achieved the highest grade possible.
Pupil Leadership is highly promoted as we believe giving children responsibility and expecting them to live up to this is a key part of their development. We have an active School Leadership Team supported by the School Council, House Captains, Sports Leaders and Prefects. Many other leadership roles are in place too in all year groups.
A thriving House System ensures all children have the chance to represent their house and gain points not just in sporting events but also through activities like House Art and Singing and we hold an exciting House Quiz every year in the Spring Term.
We hold many events in school to further enhance our curriculum and to allow the children to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world. These include a Literary Festival in the run up to World Book Day, STEM Week, Shakespeare Week, European Day of Languages and many more. Children also benefit from programmes such as Bikeability in Year 6 and St John’s First Aid Training.
