Ashbridge Independent School Juniors

The Junior School at Ashbridge comprises lower Juniors, Years 3 and 4, and Upper Juniors, Years 5 and 6. This stage of learning is a time of real growth and development for our pupils, which is reflected in their TAPESTRY curriculum.

Junior School Curriculum: TAPESTRY

As children move into the Juniors, covering Year 3 to Year 6, they are exposed to a broad and challenging curriculum developed to encompass all that we value in an excellent education. The curriculum highlights the importance of combined academic excellence and holistic development and the links between outdoor and indoor learning and how the two successfully complement each other. Subjects are taught in a dynamic and exciting way and links made between subjects bring learning to life. Pupils are enthusiastic and actively involved in their learning and there are many ways their voices can be heard. The requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met and enhanced by providing additional lessons and specialist teaching in Sport, Horticulture, Music including keyboards and brass, Modern Foreign Languages and Outdoor Learning. PSHE and relationships education is covered through our personal development programme and enhanced through assemblies, trips and numerous opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles.

We undertake thorough yet low-stress academic testing, with every year group taking part in nationally recognised, standardised tests annually and biannual reading age tests. Our academic results are consistently excellent, with all classes achieving above or significantly above the national average year on year.

Children of all ages take part in numerous concerts each year and enjoy an annual trip to the Theatre. All pupils in Juniors enjoy the opportunity for a residential experience from one night away for Year 3 to a full week away in Year 6. There are over 30 sports fixtures each year and many opportunities for children to represent their House as part of our thriving House System. An extensive programme of clubs and activities, some led by pupils adds to the curriculum, and these are very well attended.

  • House System

Ashbridge Independent School employs a house system to foster a strong sense of community amongst our pupils. As members of the Junior School, children have the opportunity to become house leaders and prefects, which is an excellent way to develop leadership skills.
  • Specialist Teaching

Specialist teaching is provided in Music, Outdoor Education, Modern Foreign Languages, Horticulture, and Games, allowing pupils to broaden their skill sets and explore their varying interests.
  • Exceptional Results

In 2025, 94 % of pupils were achieving or exceeding year group expectation in English and Science and 100% in Maths. All pupils who sat entrance exams were offered places at the school of their choice with pupils being offered academic and sporting scholarships.

TAPESTRY

Named TAPESTRY, our primary school curriculum programme is all-encompassing to support your child both academically and holistically. By equally developing our pupils’ academic excellence and personal development, we ensure all children leave Ashbridge as confident and well-rounded individuals, ready for the next step at their chosen Senior School.

Additional Support

To ensure every child’s needs are met, the team members from Ashbridge Independent School will work closely with small groups of children who would either benefit from additional support or are high academic achievers and require further development in different subject areas.

FAQs

Do the children bring and sort their own bags out in the morning at drop-off?

We try to encourage independence in Juniors ready for moving up the school and onto secondary school. Children can be dropped off at school care/the orchard gate and then make their way over to sort their belongings.

You use more apps/online programs in Juniors. How do the children know their login details, and am I expected to sit and do any online homework with them?

Login details will be stuck in the front of the children’s journals so they can access these as and when needed. Most homework set will be aimed at independent study, so your child should be able to access and complete this by themselves. Our programs such as Learning by Questions adapts itself to the child’s ability, so they do as much as they can.

Will my child be tested on their spelling and times tables?

In lower Juniors Spelling Shed and Times Tables Rockstars are used to learn these. They are tested on each, once a week, in accordance with the class teacher’s timetable.

How long should my child spend on Spelling Shed and Times Tables Rockstars?

In Juniors being fluent with their multiplication tables and being able to spell well are key to their progress in English and Maths. Little and often is usually what we say. 10/15 minutes as often as they can really does help support their learning.
